The Department of Prosthodontics is dedicated to creating dental prosthetics (artificial teeth) for damaged or missing teeth and trains students in various specialties, including Fixed Prosthodontics, Removable Prosthodontics, Occlusion, TMJ Dysfunction, Dental Implants, and Maxillofacial Prosthodontics. Our curriculum emphasizes an evidence-based approach to solving patients’ clinical problems, focusing on restoring morphology, function, and aesthetics.
We offer comprehensive training to graduate students in all years of BDS and MDS, leading to a specialty degree in Prosthodontics. Our simulation and bench courses teach fundamental skills, progressing to more complex
Prosthodontics cases. We annually evaluate and update our courses to ensure they align with the latest techniques in Prosthodontics, comprehensive treatment planning, Implant Dentistry, Occlusion, and Aesthetics.
Our department strives for excellence in research, pursuing high-quality studies that meet international standards. We continuously improve our teaching techniques and methods, ensuring our students receive the best education possible. Additionally, we have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Implant Foundation (IF), Germany, to explore immediate loading strategic portico- basal implants.

Dr. R. Kamalakannan
Working as a professor and HOD in Karpaga vinayaga dental college since 2007. He has a good clinical experience of more than 15 years in implants and has conducted various workshops and CDE Programs.He is a renowned prosthodontist and Implantologist.He has a particular field of interest in full mouth rehabilitation using basal implants.

In dentistry the Department of prosthodontics is responsible for training students in Fixed Prosthodontics, Removable Prosthodontics, Occlusion and TMJ Dysfunction, Dental Implants, Maxillofacial Prosthodontics. Our students are made to understand the basic ideas for the application of an evidence-based approach to help with patient’s clinical problems. The field of Prosthodontics helps in restoring morphology, function and esthetics.The department teaches graduate trainer in all years of BDS and MDS leading to a specialty degree in Prosthodontics.
Curriculum is designed such that students go through simulation and bench courses to learn the fundamental skills evolving to more complex Prosthodontics cases. Courses are evaluated and updated annually for contents and are augmented with technology to teach the latest techniques in Prosthodontics within comprehensive treatment planning, Implant Dentistry, Occlusion and Aesthetics. We further aim to pursue research of high international quality, and to constantly improve on our teaching techniques/methods.we have signed a MOU with implant foundation(IF), Germany on immediate loading strategic portico-basal implants.

TRAINING IN IMPLANT PROSTHODONTICS 4.0
August 16th,2023, KARPAGA VINAYAGA INSTITUTE OF DENTAL SCIENCE
The implant program titled “Training in implant prosthodontics 4.0 “was organised by the Department of Prosthodontics, on 16th august,2023. The program comprised of a pretest followed by the lecture series and live demonstration. The first lecture was delivered by by Dr..Kamalakannan, head of the department, department of prosthodontics and crown & bridge on “basic of implant” that enlightened the participants about the case selection, Investigations and treatment planning of implants. The second lecture was on surgical, prosthetic and maintenance phase by Dr. Nagappan, professor, department of prosthodontics and crown & bridge. Few clinical cases were discussed by Dr.Arun prasad, Reader, department of prosthodontics and crown & bridge. Later, live demonstration was conducted by Dr.Bala guhan Head Of the Department,, department of oral maxillofacial surgery along with Dr.Kamalakannan Head of the Department, department of prosthodontics. Seven implants placed on the completely edentulous mandibular arch. The participants were fascinated and enthusiastic about the live demonstration. There were totally 13 participants and benefited from the event.
