Department of orthodontics and Dentofacial orthopedics established in the year 2007. It specializes in treating various malocclusion, with keen interest on tempero mandibular disorders, Accerlated orthodontics, Surgical orthodontics, mini- implants, clear aligners, Lingual orthodontics etc.

Undergraduate training programme begin from third year  which extends till final year B.D.S. Students learn the art of wire bending exercises, case history, diagnosis, cephalometric and removable appliance fabrication and trained in treating mild malocclusion with removable and functional orthodontics appliance.

Post graduate training program comprosises of three years of residency programme. The goal of this programme are to train B.D.S graduate to practice orthodontics efficiently and effectively backed by scientific knowledge and skills. And enable them to participate in multidisciplinary treatment with extensive clinical training under expertise faculty guidance.

Facilities in our department includes reception area, waiting area, operating room, photography room, seminar room, OPG room, clinical laboratory room, separate faculty room etc.

Department works in close coordination with department of Oral and maxillofacial surgery for treating various skeletal malocclusion of jaws with orthognathic surgery. Department also coordinates with Department of Periodontics, Prosthoodontics, conservative dentistry and endodontics  involving comphrensive orthodontic  rehabilitation.

KIDS PRELUDE 2023, a preparatory practical exam was held in the Department of Orthodontics and Dento facial Orthopaedics  at Karpaga Vinayaga Institute of Dental Science. The event took place over two days, on May 2 and 3, 2023. The primary goal of the programme was to prepare the PG students for their practical assessment, which can increase their confidence and offer them a quick review of all the topics required for the examination. This programme offered an examination that was mimicking all the guidelines followed by the MGR University which allowed the students to get a first hand experience of the practical examination. 17 distinguished professors from SRM University, Meenakshi University, Sri Ramachandra University, MGR University and Saveetha University were invited as examiners. A lengthy discourse on how to approach the theoretical and practical examinations was delivered by the Chief guest, Dr.Ashwin George from Saveetha University. Twenty PG students from all over Chennai attended the programme ant it consisted of four sessions : I) Bonding on patients II) Functional case analysis and treatment planning III) Assessment of Retraction cases including fabrication of loop  IV) Long case discussion followed by grand viva. The PG students were required to attend vivas following each session, where they received individualized attention that helped them retain more information about the session and it was made sure that the students doesn’t see the same examiner twice. The renowned orthodontists received mementos and certificates followed by students receiving certificates for participation at the end of the programme.

CDE PROGRAM – SELF LIGATION – A NEW ERA

28^TH JULY 2O22

The Department Of Orthodontics conducted a CDE program “SELF LIGATION – A NEW ERA” on 28th July 2022. The program was organized for post graduates specializing in orthodontics as a yearlong module based clinical workshop in coordination with University education program Ormco. Prof. Dr. C.S Ramachandra, senior orthodontic faculty and a keynote speaker of Ormco was invited as the guest speaker. Program was framed to have two lectures in morning session and a clinical workshop with demonstration of bonding, banding and archwire placement post lunch. Dr. C.S Ramachandra demonstrated the procedure on patients to the participants.43 participants of both faculties and postgraduate students from six other dental institutions across Chennai attended the program. The speaker gave a good insight about self-ligation. The participants were provided certificates.

Letter of understanding was signed between the Karpaga Vinayaga institute of dental science and University education program Ormco for a yearlong module based hands-on workshop.

Department of orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics organized TYPHODONT WORKSHOP HAND’S-ON (Feb – 28^th & Mar 1^st 2022) at karpaga vinayaga institute of dental science. Dr Balasubramanian Madhan, HOD and Professor, JIPMER, Pondicherry was invited as course mentor. The objective of the workshop was to develop an insight on edge wise and PEA concepts. The first year post graduated perusing orthodontics as specialty were the target population.15 dental colleges from India participated with 69 registered post graduate students. The participants were provided with necessary material to practice hand’s on.

Dr Thirunavukkarasu, HOD and faculty members of department of orthodontics, Karpaga vinayaga institute of dental science with Dr Balasubramanian Madhan, HOD and Professor mentored the students on edge wise and PEA techniques.
