Department Of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Karpaga Vinayaga Institute Of Dental Sciences As Establish 2007. Department Has Highly Trained and Experienced Surgeons who always believe in teaching and training the student at the best of the core at the same time very friendly and co-operative it full ethics.

Training for under graduate and post graduate includes exposure of full spectrum oral and maxillofacial surgery that leads to diagnosis & treatment of a broad range of disorders affecting the facial complex & skeleton includes the jaw & oral cavity.

These includes a range of common oral surgical problems  like Minor Oral Surgeries ,Facial & Dental Implants, Complex Maxillofacial Trauma, Salivary Gland Disease, Temporomandibular Joint Disorders , Cyst And Tumors Of Jaw ,Congenital Facial Disproportion (Orthognathic Surgeries), Secondary Traumatic Correction, Orbital Complex Surgeries , Minimally Invasive Surgeries (Tmj Arthroscopy) ,  Cleft Lip And Palate Repair, Syndrome Correction, Aesthetic Facial Surgeries,   Head And Neck Cancer With Micro vascular Reconstruction.

We do have state of art of facilities to provide quality and revise treatment to achieve functional and aesthetic outcome for orthognathic & cosmetic surgeries.

We work along with the well established medical college hospital that has fully fledged facility for the accident & Emergency care, International slandered operating theatres with well trained anesthetist team, ICU and patients ward facilities. We work along the collaboration with the other medical faculties as a part of multidisplinary team to optimize the treatment of major condition and disease.

We do have Skill labs for under graduate and post graduate Students are for them to get trained before entering into clinical application in order to developed clear their basics skills and fundaments.

Under graduate residents trained to do causality duties along with post graduate students to get orient into Trauma management, Intensive care procedure, in patient care & assisting all major surgical cases in Operation theatre.

Infrastructure

  1. Fully equipped dental chairs

Separate UG and PG clinics ensure structured training. UG clinics provided with separate dental chairs for undergraduates to carry out extraction procedures. PG clinics equipped with separate dental chairs with highly quipped devices and suction apparatus to carry out emergency procedures. Review/post operative surgical patients were given at most care with proper and regular follow up. 

  1. Minor operation theater

We have a air conditioned minor OT which is equipped with six dental chairs also a separate chair for conscious sedation procedure. Each chair is maintained with highly equipped suction apparatus and separate micro motor hand piece system to carry out the procedure. Minor surgical procedures including Biopsy, Surgical removal of impacted tooth, Arch bar placement, alveoloplasty, apicoectomy, cyst enucleation were done at most care.  

  1. Recovery bay

A part of minor operation theater is secured for recovery bay where patients who needs medical emergencies are taken under care with proper management and treatment. Emergency drugs were maintained at separate trolley along with oxygen administration.

  1. Sterilization room

Sterilization room is equipped with world class autoclaves, hot air over, formalin chamber for proper sterilization. Also there is a separate room for instrument distribution area where the undergraduates as well as postgraduates receive their instruments related to specific procedure.

  1. Skill lab

We have skill lab at first floor which is equipped with patient simulation clamps with separate stations. The role to simulation clamps helps the students to take over simple as well as the complex surgical procedures in dummy models as well as animal models which enhances the hand work and clinical confidence to operate on a patient. The skill lab also equipped with two dental chairs and a working station for orthognathic workup which includes Erikson platform to plan for model surgery as well as orthognathic surgery. 

  1. Post graduate Seminar room

Fully equipped with audiovisual aids for presentation, journal club meeting and seminars. Wall hanging LCD projector is utilized for presentation purposes. 

  1. Department library

Department has separate library with specialty text books and journals. Reference books were also kept for the utilization of undergraduates. 

  1. Staff room

Fully equipped staff room with two internet connected PCs and printers for seamless academic and administrative work. 

  1. Implantology centre

The department comprises a sophisticated implant center with high end, fully equipped dental chairs and multiple implant systems. Various basic and advanced implant procedures ranging from conventional implants, corticobasal implants, bone grafts, sinus lift surgeries, zygoma implants and patient specific implants are routinely carried out. The department is associated with VIP clinic where all the dental procedures are carried under one roof.

  1. Major operation theatre

The department also has a dedicated operation theatre, ICU and wards at Karpaga Vinayaga Institute of Medical sciences for the management of maxillofacial trauma, benign jaw bone tumors and orofacial pathologies, facial cleft and oral malignancies, reconstructive surgeries and TMJ Surgeries, Orthognathic surgeries.

  1. Intensive care unit

We also have surgical intensive care unit where post operative patients were taken with at most care. Major surgical procedures which requires post operative mechanical ventilation where kept under SICU with separate monitoring team for the benefit of the patient.

Dr A Mathan Mohan was born in Arumuganeri in the Southern part of Tamilnadu, India in a small rural community and matriculated from St. Thomas Matriculation Higher Secondary School in 1991

BDS – Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu  1998.

MDS- Vinayaga Mission College, Salem 2002.

FHNO- Fellowship program in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology at Narayana Hrudalaya Health City, Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Centre, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, ), Bangalore in the year 2011.

AOCMF- AOCMF fellowship from Hanover Medical School, Germany from February to April 2011

IFHNOS- Fellow of International federation of head and neck oncology

IBOMS- Indian Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

IBSCOMS- International Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

Currently, he is a Professor & DEAN, Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Chief, Head & Neck Services at Karpaga Vinayaga Institute of Dental and Medical Sciences. He is also a senior and distinguished consultant at various renowned hospitals in Chennai. He also manages an entire gamut of disorders in the fields of oral & maxillofacial surgery and head and neck surgical oncology which also includes provision of emergency services pertaining to facial trauma and infections.

His team includes highly dedicated and eminent specialists in the field of craniofacial surgery, facial plastic & reconstructive surgery, oral implantology and orthodontics.

Dr. Balaguhan is a Cranio-Facial surgeon .he completed his surgical training in oral and maxillofacial surgery from SRI RAMCHANDRA UNIVERSITY. He perused his higher super specialty training in CLEFT CRANIO-FACIAL SURGERY from RAJIV GANDHI UNIVERSITY under PROF.PAUL L SALENS. He has 13 yrs experience in Facial Reconstructive Surgery, Temporomandibular surgeries and  Pediatric Craniofacial surgery.

Goals & Objectives

To provide high quality postgraduate as well as undergraduate dental education in maxillofacial surgery and to accomplish this in an environment that provides the intellectual and emotional support necessary to become a skilled and effective surgeon. By the completion of the course the student should:

1.Be capable of evaluating and managing patients with a broad range of surgical problems from the preoperative through postoperative phases of any  illness or injuries.

2.Have a basic understanding of the pathophysiology and natural history of surgical disease basic knowledge of operating room procedures.

3.Be adept at managing surgical patients and teaching the principles of patient management to junior residents and students.

4.Have a comprehensive knowledge of surgical diseases and an appropriate application of this knowledge to the clinical situations.

5.Achieve a working knowledge of other surgical subspecialties and an ability to supervise and directly manage critically ill or injured patients.

6.Be familiar with current surgical literature.

7.Demonstrate technical skills , clinical judgement and firm grasp of surgical knowledge deemed appropriate for the independent practice of Maxillofacial surgery.

8.Have the level of knowledge and technical skills necessary to serve the community successfully.

CDE PROGRAM – ORAL MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY-KOMZ

Day 1

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in hand with  ZORIOX Systems proudly conducted  two days Workshop and Continuing Dental Education Program on Patient specific Implants(PSI) for post operative management of Mucormycosis patients.On day one the Program was inagurated by the Dean Dr.A.MATHAN MOHAN MDS, FHNO,FIOBM and Vice-Principal Dr.T.SARAVANAN MDS and Dr.J.ARUN  MDS. The Guest speakers were Dr.Karthik balaji MDS Oral Maxillo facial surgery and Chief Executive Officer of ZORIOX who presented with the innovations and techniques in framing a Patient Specific Implant and it was followed by  Dr.B.Balaguhan  MDS Head of the Department, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Karpaga Vinayaga Institute of Dental Sciences presented about different case senarios for Patient Specific Implants framingand Dr.S.Anandan Padmanaban MDS Department of Prosthodontics and Crown and Bridgepresemted about the prosthetic rehabilitation and construction. The program was attended by 20 postgraduate students from various Dental Colleges from the state and 50 undergraduate students who attended the Live demonstration which was telecasted from Operation theatre Complex. The event was a comprehensive and wholesome program on acquiring adequate knowledge and exposure on constructing Patient Specific Implants.


Day 2

The second day workshop was initiated with a panel of members from the Department of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery who had group discussion on the previous cases for which the Patient Specific Implants were done with the Guidance of the Professor and Head OMFS Dr.BALAGUHAN B MDS, and the post graduates from various colleges were allowed to discuss and expand their views into the new system of construction on Surgical aspects.

Apart from which on Honouring the House Surgeons who presented Case Presentation in Priyadharshini Dental College and Hospital representing the  department of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery won First Prize for the cases they have presented by competing with 11 other dental college students, the event was State level Case Presentation Convention which held on 12th and 13th of August 2022 and the winners were Dr.ASHWANTH and Dr.ABARNA.V respectively.
